The American Freedom Train in Memphis, Tennessee
April 17-22, 1976

The train's 77th display city.

The road to Memphis was the first real test of the MU-equipped 4449 controlling trailing diesels.

The train displayed along the Mississippi River near Mud Island. Temporary tracks were laid across a busy street for the loco and train. Then the section across the street was pulled up, effectively stranding the train.

Once the temp track was pulled up, Riverside Dr. was reopened. Memphis was the only display site where the train was completely cut off from the rail system.
