Long before the Civil
Rights Movement had a name, Buddy Green, Langston Hughes and the
California Labor School Chorus produced a 78 rpm record of songs
related to the Freedom Train and the American Heritage Foundation's
stand against segregation aboard the Freedom Train.
That policy lead the
Train to bypass Memphis and Birmingham -- but did allow it to display
in Savannah and Brunswick, GA, where alternating groups of blacks
and whites were allowed aboard -- 25 at a time.
As one observer noted
in Savannah -- "They went in separate, but came out all mixed
together".
