THE 1947 - 1949 FREEDOM TRAIN U.S. MARINES: THE TRAIN'S PROUD STAFF The train and its contents were guarded 24 hours a day by a hand-picked detachment of 29 U.S. Marines who stood guard duty and interpreted the train's precious contents to visitors. They lived and rode aboard the train. While officially identified as a military Honor Guard Detachment, these Marines served as the hosts, interpretive staff, and sources of information for thrilled and humbled visitors of all ages.
