The George Falcon Golden Spike Award

While in Anaheim, magazine publisher George Falcon presented the American Freedom Train with the George Falcon Key Magazine Golden Spike Award. Joining him for the presentation of the award were AFT Foundation President Petr Spurney (left) and Astronaut Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin (right), as seen on the cover of Key Magazine two weeks later.

According to the magazine, previous recipients of the Golden Spike Award included Debbie Reynolds (whose father worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad), Walt Disney and Johnny Cash. The City of Anaheim itself later won the award in 1983.

Falcon was an early supporter of the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP). So much so that the Golden Spike Award eventually became an NARP award -- one that is still awarded each year to people who make significant contributions to the preservation and improvement of passenger railroading in America.

More on the history of the George Falcon Golden Spike Award can be found at the NARP website.
